Job Responsibilities & Requirements

To begin a career in structural steel detailing by supporting the technical team in producing drawings and documentation for fabrication and installation. This role is designed for a school leaver with A‑levels who is keen to develop technical, engineering, and construction skills through structured training and on‑the‑job learning.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn to read and interpret general arrangement drawings, specifications, and basic structural details with guidance from senior team members.
  • Assist in producing fabrication drawings, call‑offs, and mark‑up drawings using AutoCAD and Tekla.
  • Carry out drawing amendments and updates under supervision to reflect approved changes.
  • Support the detailing team with document control, drawing issue registers, and project administration tasks.
  • Develop an understanding of steel fabrication and erection processes.
  • Ensure all work is completed in line with company procedures, quality standards, and relevant legislation.
  • Communicate clearly with colleagues and escalate queries or errors promptly.
  • Assist with investigations into site or fabrication queries where required.
  • Follow company Health, Safety & Environment (H.S.E.) policies at all times.
  • Commit to ongoing training and development, including formal qualifications where applicable.

 

Person Specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential

  • A‑levels (or equivalent), including:
    • Mathematics (required)
    • One other STEM subject (e.g. Physics, Engineering, Design & Technology, or IT)

Desirable

  • Further Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering‑related coursework
  • Interest or project work related to construction, design, or engineering

 

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Strong numerical and problem‑solving skills
  • Office-based role
  • Good attention to detail and accuracy
  • Basic IT skills, including confidence using computers and software
  • Willingness to learn technical drawing and specialist software (AutoCAD/Tekla)

Desirable

  • Basic familiarity with technical drawings or CAD software (school or personal projects)
  • Understanding of construction or engineering principles

  • Enthusiastic and motivated to build a career in engineering or construction
  • Well organised and able to follow instructions
  • Methodical approach to work

  • Willingness to attend college or training courses as part of the role (if applicable)
  • Willingness to travel to site or supplier visits when required
  • Full driving licence desirable but not essential
