Job Responsibilities & Requirements

POSITION SUMMARY:

Operate and set up Amada CNC laser cutting systems, robotic welding cells, and auxiliary manufacturing equipment to produce structural steel components that meet engineering specifications, dimensional requirements, and quality standards. Responsible for reading blueprints, verifying measurements, performing in-process inspections, maintaining tight tolerances, and accurately reporting production results. Supports continuous improvement, safety, quality, and productivity initiatives within the MBP manufacturing operation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Set up and operate Amada CNC laser cutting equipment, including loading programs, selecting materials, verifying tooling and machine settings, and processing steel components and custom parts according to work orders, blueprints, and production schedules.
  • Perform routine operator maintenance on Amada laser equipment, including nozzle changes, lens inspections, cleaning procedures, and daily machine checks to ensure optimal performance and cut quality.
  • Manufacture steel components from various material thicknesses while maintaining print specifications and required dimensional tolerances as specified on engineering drawings, including tolerances as tight as ±0.010" where applicable. Verify compliance through the use of precision measuring instruments and first-piece inspections.
  • Set up, operate, monitor, and troubleshoot robotic welding cells to ensure weld quality and production efficiency.  
  • Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, engineering drawings, bills of material (BOMs), routings, work instructions, and revision-controlled documents to ensure conformance with customer and engineering requirements.
  • Perform dimensional inspections utilizing calipers, micrometers, height gauges, angle gauges, tape measures, and other precision measuring tools to verify compliance with engineering specifications.
  • Inspect welded components for fit-up, weld size, penetration, appearance, distortion, and overall conformance to quality standards and engineering requirements.
  • Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections to verify quality and compliance with specifications.
  • Load, unload, and organize raw materials and finished products using forklifts and material handling equipment.
  • Perform machine changeovers, tooling adjustments, and minor programming edits as necessary.
  • Identify and report quality concerns, equipment malfunctions, tooling issues, and production abnormalities.
  • Complete production reporting, quality documentation, and material transactions accurately.
  • Support preventive maintenance activities on Amada laser systems, robotic welding equipment, and related machinery.
  • Assist with lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Attendance at work during the regularly scheduled shift is an essential duty. This includes, but is not limited to the ability to work overtime as required, to be present at work, arrive on time and be at the work station ready for work at the start of the shift.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, manufacturing drawings, weld symbols, and engineering specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspect and verify parts to print specifications and required tolerances.
  • Knowledge of geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T) preferred.
  • Experience operating CNC laser cutting equipment in a manufacturing environment; Amada laser experience preferred.
  • Experience operating or supporting robotic welding equipment preferred.
  • Strong understanding of fabrication processes, material characteristics, and weld quality requirements.
  • Ability to identify dimensional defects, weld defects, and quality concerns before product moves to downstream operations.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing tolerances and precision measurement techniques.
  • Ability to maintain quality standards while meeting production goals.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have programming experience or have basic understanding of computers and basic programming.
  • Competent in basic dimensional measuring.
  • Demonstrated competency in basic shop math. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Must be able to read shop drawings.
  • Ability to use forklift.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and respond to change.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, work with minimal supervision, very self-motivated.
  • Safety: Must have an outstanding safety record and follow all safety policies and procedures.
    • Participate in safety training and meetings.
    • Maintain clean and safe work area.
    • Report all injuries/accidents near misses immediately to supervisor or a member of management. Report all unsafe acts and conditions.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Education and/or Experience

High School Diploma or GED required. One year of manufacturing, CNC equipment, fabrication, welding, or related industrial experience preferred. Experience operating Amada laser cutting equipment is strongly preferred.

Language Skills:

Effectively communicate with co-workers and management regarding work and safety issues.

Mathematical Skills:

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:

Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Comprehend job training and safety instructions.
Computer Skills:

PC skills and basic CNC programming required.
