Job Description

MiTek is looking for an experienced and motivated engineer who has experience in designing real buildings, and is ready to influence how those buildings are designed at scale.

As a Senior Structural Engineer within MiTek’s Global R&D Engineering Group, you’ll bring your experience as a structural engineer into a highly applied R&D environment focused on solving real-world structural challenges. This is not theoretical research, you will work on initiatives that directly impact how wood-framed buildings are designed, analyzed, and constructed across the industry.

You’ll develop new structural methods, evaluate and interpret building codes, and translate field and design insights into scalable engineering solutions that power MiTek’s key initiatives.

Job Responsibilities & Requirements

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead specific research studies, including experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation; identifies trends, and prepares clear technical summaries. 

  • Conducts in-depth literature reviews and contributes significantly to the ideation process for novel structural solutions. 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., design engineering, marketing, manufacturing) to conceptualize, design, and prototype structural solutions that meet project requirements and performance objectives. 

  • Independently manages R&D projects and collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure timely delivery of outcomes, demonstrating effective project management with minimal supervision. 

  • Designs and oversees physical and virtual testing programs for complex structural elements. 

  • Evaluates the behavior of structural components and systems under various loading conditions using advanced computational tools and techniques. 

  • Reads, interprets, and applies building codes, design standards, testing standards, and technical reports, identifying critical implications for new and existing products. 

  • Prepare and present comprehensive technical reports and findings to internal stakeholders and external customers. 

  • Provide technical support to Engineering teams for the implementation and integration of innovative structural solutions into real-world applications, from concept to construction. 

  • Serve as a senior and reliable team member, reviewing and approving technical tasks and reports from junior team members. Trains and starts mentoring junior engineers on essential duties, leading by example in technical execution and problem-solving. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Civil Engineering or related field; equivalent combination of experience and education which clearly indicates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position may substitute on a year for year basis

  • 6+ Years of relevant engineering experience with PE (Civil-Structural) required

  • 12+ years of relevant engineering experience required without PE

  • Demonstrated expertise in structural engineering principles, building design codes, (e.g., IBC, ASCE 7) and relevant industry standards 

  • Proven experience with structural analysis software and simulation tools (including CAD software) 

  • Experience in prototyping and experimental validation 

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams and influence outcomes 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field

  • Prior experience working as an Engineer of Record

  • 3+ years of light framed wood design engineering experience with PE (Civil-Structural), or 6+ years of light framed wood design engineering experience without PE
